1. When did your business open?
My wife and I opened Ying Son Asian Foods in October 2021.
2. Why was the business started?
We wanted a place where people could buy Asian groceries and food and not be afraid to ask questions. Many people find Asian food quite intimidating, so we wanted to create a space where customers would feel comfortable.
3. What does your business do? What do you specialise in?
We are an Asian grocery store which sells essential Asian groceries.
We stock take home meals, boba tea, tofu, Chinese vegetables and frozen goods like dumplings, pastries and wonton wrappers.
We also have a small lunch menu during the day.
4. What is your business’ biggest achievement?
At the moment, just being able to open a business during this global pandemic.
5. What is your business’ biggest challenge?
We are still trying to get more people to come to our shop, but it will improve with time.
6. Why are you proud of Ying Son Asian Foods?
We opened this business with no help from an investor. This business has been completely funded by our family.
7. Why are you a proudly South African business?
We create employment for South Africans and we support local South African businesses where we can.
8. Why are you a proudly Chinese business?
We stock a lot of Chinese products and cook a lot of Chinese dishes, so we are able to share our culture with the people of Cape Town.
9. Where do you operate?
Our shop is at 3 Mains Avenue, Kenilworth in Cape Town (next to Noyes Pharmacy and the Post Office).
