KWF SA Karate Champions

Matthew Pine (12), a Grade 6 learner from Craighall Primary School in Johannesburg, represented South Africa at the 8th Karatenomichi World Federation (KWF) World Cup 2017 in Malta and won two silver medals.


The Dorfman Karate member claimed our country's first medal with silver in the ‘Individual Kata' (male 12-14 years) category. His second was for the ‘Unison Kata Youth Section’ as part of the South Africa B-team.

Tony Yang (gold medal), Mary Liu (gold and bronze medal), Jayden Mingsun and Michael Yang were among fifteen Reddam House Bedfordview Alan Lambrechs Martial Arts Academy learners to win six medals at the 20th KWF South African National Children's and Youth Championships 2019.

Parktown Boys' High School Grade 8 learner Matthew Pine achieved the following results:

  • Gold medal in 'Open Kata' (2005);

  • Silver medal in 'Advanced Kihon Ippon Kumite' (2005/2006); and

  • Bronze medal in 'Open Jiyu Ippon Kumite' (2004/2005).



Representing South Africa at the 9th KWF World Cup 2019 in Tokyo, Japan, the red belt karateka:

  • won gold in the 'Team Unison Kata Youth' (16-17 years);

  • placed 4th in the 'Individual Kata Male Youth' (14-15 years) and

  • reached the quarterfinals in the 'Individual Jiyu Ippon Mixed Youth' (14-15 years) divisions.

Rachael Hsu won the gold medal in the Kihon Kata 1 (7 years old age group) at the 21st KWF South African National Children's and Youth Championships 2022.



The competition was set out in several knockout rounds, whereby two participants showcased their skills against each other in selected kata, took place on Saturday 28th May 2022 at the Portuguese Hall in Turffontein, Johannesburg.



Mary Liu claimed two golds in the Intermediate Kata (born in 2008 - 2009) and Intermediate Female Kihon Ippon Kumite (born in 2007 - 2009) categories and Eddie Xiao took joint bronze in Intermediate Kata (born 2005 - 2007) division.


The three karateka represented the Reddam House Bedfordview Alan Lambrechs Martial Arts Academy in Ekurhuleni.

Matthew Pine, a Grade 11 learner at Parktown Boys’ High School in Johannesburg, won three gold medals for Open Kata, Jiyu Ippon Kumite and Kihon Ippon Kumite in the Cadet (Age 16 to 17) categories.


The Dorfman Karate 1st-dan black belt will represent South Africa at the World Shotokan Karate-do Association (WSKA) Championships 2022 in Liverpool, England during September.
