Amrita - Turning poison to medicine

Congratulations to Angela Yeung for exhibiting her new jewellery collection "Amrita" during a one-night contemporary fine arts exhibition on Thursday 22nd August 2019 at the Lizamore Gallery in Rosebank, Johannesburg.

The artist

Angela Yeung is the acclaimed award-winning jewellery designer and business woman behind the bespoke jewellery brand, Impilo Collection. Born in Hong Kong, Angela immigrated to South Africa as a young child in 1990.

Inspired by the fine jewellery she found in the East and Africa’s abundant precious metals and minerals, Angela studied metal smith crafting before going on to graduate from the Gemological Institute of America with the title of “Diamond Grading Graduate” – Accredited Jewellery Professional.

The collection

In 2005, Angela founded her own jewellery company, Impilo Collection, which specializes in

the design and manufacture of both bespoke jewellery commissions for private clients and

contemporary art jewellery collections.

“Impilo” is an isiZulu word which means “life”. She believes that every life story is uniquely personal and each visit to Impilo should be an equally unique experience.

Every Impilo jewelry piece is an intimate work of art – it doesn’t just tell a story; it tells your story. Its design is as distinctively different as you, adorning and enhancing your life - expressing the significant and memorable moments in it”.

Impilo Collection Investment and Fine Jewellery has exhibited at several international jewellery fairs in London, Miami, Japan, China and Hong Kong. Her contemporary range has featured in collaborations with many South African designers including David Tlale, Ryan Keys and Rubicon.

The exhibition

“Amrita” is a word in sanskrit that literally means "immortality" and is often referred to in texts as nectar. Angela's values incapsulate the essence of life itself with good overcoming suffering.

Turning poison into medicine – purifying your life through these experiences.

"Asian belief in the power encapsulated in pearls have elements similar to the African belief in the power of the ancestors. Pearls can be incorporated into the life blood of Africa. Pearls, with their luminosity and vibrant life, have their own lifeforce and amrita and embody the medicinal transition from the poisons of life to healing."

The above Amrita ring is crafted in nine carat yellow gold with organic mother of pearl and a touch of garnet red.

Angela's exhibition took all on a journey from poison inside all of us into the realm of medicinal beauty.

"When you enter into my Amrita exhibition, you will be transitioning into a world of healing – from the challenges of life to the ultimate tranquility of the luminosity of the pearl lifeblood, with connections between your heart and your head."

This exhibition is an extention of her award-winning AngloGold Ashanti headpiece “Connect” by adding pearls with their essential “Amrita” into the mind. The evening was a labyrinth of enchanting masks, music, dance, fine art and jewellery.

"Enlighten yourself with your heart, your body and your mind and to surround yourself with Amrita.
