Representing SA in Maths & Informatics


Andi Qu is a Grade 11 learner from St John's College in Houghton Estate, Johannesburg. Awarded his South African blazer and colours for Mathematics and Computer Programming respectively in March 2019, the Clayton House 2020 prefect also holds school honours in academics and music.

Congratulations on winning the gold medal and Standard Bank Trophy at the 36th annual National Programming Olympiad 2019 at Standard Bank's Global Leadership Centre in Johannesburg, bringing the coveted prize back in Gauteng after three years in Western Cape.

He likes computational geometry, enjoys “cool, ad-hoc problems” more than the “maths and data structure questions”, plans to study computer science and "probably AI".

Well done to Andi Qu awarded third place out of over 91,000 competitors in the senior competition of the 2019 SAMO (South African Mathematics Olympiad) by the SAMF (South African Mathematics Foundation) during their annual gala dinner and prize-giving held on Saturday 14th September 2019 in Gordon's Bay, Cape Town.

He also helped St John's College be recognised as the top school in Gauteng for 2019.

Representing SA in Informatics

Proud of Andi Qu for placing 201 out of 325 participants from 86 countries during the 31st International Olympiad of Informatics (IOI) held in Baku, Azerbaijan from 4th to 7th August 2019.

He helped the four-member team representing SA achieve the highest ranked African country and second best in the Southern Hemisphere.

Representing SA in Mathematics

Well done to Andi Qu, awarded a 'Honourable mention' (and missing the medal cutoff by 2 places) at the 60th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in Bath, United Kingdom from 11th to 22nd July 2019.

Competing against 621 competitors, he helped SA move up from 62th to 46th out of 112 participating countries.

Proud of Andi Qu for winning a silver medal by placing 6th overall as one of six high school learners selected to represent South Africa against twelve other African countries in the 27th Pan African Mathematics Olympiad (PAMO) held at the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences in Muizenberg on Sunday 7th April 2019. Team South Africa finished second behind Morocco.

Mathematics

Congratulations to Andi Qu, Captain of the ten-member Wits Siyanqoba Senior Team A, for winning the 2019 ASSA (Actuarial Society of SA) Mathematics Team Competition. They received their ASSA trophy and sponsored Casio watches during the SAMF (South African Mathematics Foundation) annual award function on the Saturday 14th September 2019 in Gordon’s Bay Cape Town.

"Baie geluk" to Andi Qu, the R 5,000 winner of the Northern provinces in the 'Beeld, Die Burger en Volksblad Mathematics Online Competition' in 2018.

He also placed 2nd overall in the senior section of the Wits University Maths Competition 2018 and was awarded a gold medal in the grade 9-10 section of the International Mathematics Assessments for Schools (IMAS) 2018.

Well done to Andi Qu, the 2017 SAMO (South African Mathematics Olympiad) Junior section winner for grades 8 and 9 at the Krystal Beach Hotel in Gordon's Bay, Cape Town. He was the runner-up in 2016.

Computer Programming

Proud of Andi Qu, awarded a bronze medal in the South African Programming Olympiad 2018 at Standard Bank's Global Leadership Centre in Johannesburg.

The youngest Top 10 finalist was joined by his mother Seisha, sister Anqi and father Jack. Anqi Qu is Head Girl 2019 at St Mary's School Waverley in Johannesburg. Learn more about her here.

Some of Andi's other programming achievements include:

  • One of 54 Grand-prize winners for Apertium in the Google Code-In 2018, an annual international competition where high-school learners contribute to various open-source organizations by completing tasks;

  • Platinum division competitor in the USA Computing Olympiad (USACO);

  • Bronze medalist in the Asian Pacific Informatics Olympiad (APIO) 2019); and

  • 3rd round qualifier for the Google Code Jam 2019.

 

Music

Congratulations to Andi Qu, Runner-up in the Woodwind section of the Rodean Music Competition 2019.

He passed his Grade 8 Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) examinations in piano and flute with distinction during 2018.

Andi was also a semi-finalist in the Atterbury National Piano Competition 2017 in the U/16 age category.

He is also a member of St John's College choir.
